FASHION & ART VOCABULARY LIST

Sound really cultured and hip at your next cocktail party (or at least know what everyone else is talking about!)

Conker – British-speak for a rich chestnut brown
Deck Fluff – eye candy on a boat
Decolletage – [noun] the neckline of a dress cut low in front or back and often across the shoulders
Decolleté – [adjective] (wearing a) low-necked (garment)
Degradé – painterly technique of fading; color-bleed [see Alexander McQueen's kimono at right, for sale at Neiman Marcus]
Delightmare (possibly coined by Isaac Mizrahi) – when something is incredibly wonderful and a nightmare at the same time
Foxymoron – a dim but cute gal
Gallerina – bright, attractive art world gal
Kawaii (Jap.) – girly cuteness; infantile dressing (a la Chloe and Miu Miu babydolls from last Spring)
Ombré – a tie-dye fading technique [see Alberta Ferreti, lower right, courtesy http://fabsugar.com/479257]
Poddy – very 21st Century (with an i-pod like quality)
Soigné – carefully or elegantly done; well-groomed; polished; sophisticated
Specchio – a smooth leather bearing resemblance to real alloys
Sugokuii (Jap.) - supercool
Vernissage – (Fr.) varnishing day [the day before the opening of an art exhibition]
